Learn How Rocket Met Groot in New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Animated Preview

In the Guardians of the Galaxy film, Rocket Raccoon and Groot were introduced as partners before they eventually aligned themselves with Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer. The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy animated series doesn’t share direct continuity with the movie, but it is clearly inspired by director James Gunn’s film. Earlier preview clips have depicted Star-Lord’s first meeting with Yondu and the origin of Groot. Now it’s time for the origin of Rocket Raccoon!

The comic book incarnation of Rocket Raccoon was created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Keith Giffen all the way back in 1976…and his origin story is hopelessly convoluted by retcons. Compared to that, Rocket’s origin in this two-part video is a more effective way to depict how he became the Rocket we know and love from the movie.

An even more intriguing aspect of this preview is that it shows us how Rocket and Groot met for the first time and it reveals what happened to Rocket’s family. The video above is the first part, while the second part can be seen below.

Trevor Devall provides the voice of Rocket on the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, with Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot, Will Friedle as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, and James Arnold Taylor pulling double duty as Yondu and the telepathic Russian space dog, Cosmo.

Guardians of the Galaxy will premiere on Disney XD on September 26, 2015.
