CG-Animated KINGSGLAIVE FINAL FANTASY XV Movie Coming This Fall

This fall, Square Enix’s epic gaming franchise will continue for a new generation with Final Fantasy XV. But a new Final Fantasy game isn’t the only thing to look forward to! Square Enix and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are teaming up again for a new tie-in animated movie, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. The CG-animated film will be directed by Takeshi Nozue, the co-director of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. In other words, shut up and take our gil.

As we learned during Wednesday night’s Uncovered Final Fantasy XV livestream event, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV and the Final Fantasy XV game will have concurrent narratives. While Final Fantasy XV will focus on Prince Noctis and his quest to save the kingdom of Lucis from the Niflheim empire, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV will throw the spotlight on Noctis’ father, King Regis. Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star Sean Bean will play King Regis, alongside Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul as the elite soldier Nyx Ulric, and Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey as Princess Luna. Within the world of Final Fantasy XV, Nyx is a Kingsglaive, which is basically the name for the king’s magically empowered guards.

The first trailer for Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV went out with the announcement, and it gives us one of our best looks yet at the world of Final Fantasy XV. It seems that the cars in Lucis are very similar to the vehicles in our world. The rest of Lucis’ tech, however, appears to mix magic and science.

Here’s the synopsis for Kingsglaive from Sony:

“King Regis of Lucis commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king’s magic, Nyx Ulric and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim’s imperial army.

Before the overwhelming military might of the empire, King Regis can only salvage his kingdom by accepting an ultimatum—he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim.

As the war of wills rages, the machinations of Niflheim transform Insomnia into an awe-inspiring battleground, pulling Nyx into a struggle for the very survival of the kingdom.”

A release date for Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV was not included in the announcement, but it is expected to be released this fall. The film will be available for streaming and download later this year. Those who managed to snag the Ultimate Collector’s Editon or Deluxe Edition will get a physical disc packaged with the game too. There are currently no plans for a theatrical release.
