Killer ARCHER Season 7 Twist Changes Everything

Archer is about to do the unthinkable…

I always thought it was impossible to kill the world’s greatest secret agent, but somehow, some way, FX’s animated spy comedy is going to kill Archer. And it happens sooner than you think: in the season seven premiere cold open.

Our friends at Buzzfeed debuted the shocking scene from “The Figgis Agency” today in which two detectives (voiced by J.K. Simmons and Keegan-Michael Key) are called to a crime scene at a movie star’s mansion in Los Angeles. After trading some classic Archer barbs at each other (Are we putting “phrasing” back into rotation yet? Because we really should … ), they talk about a tuxedo-clad dead body floating in front of them in the pool. The man was shot and killed, and a gun with no serial number was found near the pool. The movie star hadn’t been home since yesterday, and the victim was killed sometime after midnight, deepening the mystery.

But then the camera pans back and reveals that the dead body is none other than Archer himself! Let that sink in for a moment. Or float in:

Archer

They’re not really going to kill off Archer, are they? He does look pretty dead in the scene, and the body has been floating in the pool for hours face down, so it’s not like he’s faking it or anything. We’re going to need some answers pronto, especially after Archer made it clear in the season six finale that even he doesn’t believe he can die.

Season seven is already shaping up to be one of the best and it hasn’t even premiered yet. Taking a cue from season five, this season is themed Archer P.I., although instead of running drugs like they did in Archer: Vice, the crew formerly known as ISIS (the reason behind the name change should be obvious) has moved to Los Angeles and is opening an private investigation firm. As you can probably tell from the premiere’s name, it won’t be called The Archer Agency. Surprisingly enough, Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell) is stepping up and taking on a leadership role, much to Archer’s chagrin and frustration.

Why the massive change going into season seven? The season six finale left the spy agency as outcasts from the entire espionage community, after their failed mission resulted in a CIA blacklisting. They didn’t really care about getting back into the CIA’s good graces, but they did need a new source of revenue. Archer told the team he had a few ideas, and now we know exactly what he was thinking: opening up a private investigation firm on the west coast.

A new teaser for season seven confirmed the career change. The minute-long video recreated the opening credits from Magnum P.I., shot for shot. And it. Is. Awesome. Check it out below:
