Kickin’ It Mary Lynn Style #14: Lisa Loeb

Mary Lynn writes: This week I get to sit down with singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb. I get to ask her about being a musician, a mom, and the creative process, and I even make an inappropriate comment using the words “rape fantasy.” But mostly I try to be on my best behavior, because she is the real deal! Yes, there is a musical treat at the end of the podcast.

  1. Charles says:

It’s not saying the phrase itself that’s so harmful, it’s the mindset it promotes. It says gay people are lesser. By using it even among friends, you’re all implicitly telling each other it’s ok to look at gay people as lesser.

  2. Charles says:

Right, the same can be said for the n-word as well. But let me guess, that’s different? The main difference being, you and your friends don’t use the n-word, but you do say “that’s so gay” quite frequently.

  3. ken lim says:

Big Lisa Loeb fan, but I think she was just a tad bit uptight on the PC thing, you can say that’s so gay, but only in a circle of close friends, and not around gay people.

I LOVED this episode! It felt so awesome like y’all were just chatting away and forgot it was recording.

As a mom of two and a small business owner who works at home with my husband, I could relate to so much of what Lisa was talking about. In addition to the physical time, there is also a mental kind of time that is just devoted to children, household, marriage and personal goings-on. I too wish I could do so much more with every moment but am not willing to be less present with my kids, my husband or myself (making time to work out is a luxurious necessity) in order to “build my business.” It will have to wait until my kids don’t want to explain their drawings of wolves and dragons or have me watch them do *whatever*.

I do hope Lisa returns. I heard her on some other things and she was great but you two have a great chemistry and I feel like you could talk about so much more.

  5. Anthony says:

If you can add to your underlying line of questions finding out what adjustments, if any, that your guests have made since having kids, it would really add to your unique perspective. A kind of before and after picture of their lives.

A nice and Loebly ep, specially going “unplugged”.

  6. Scott B. says:

Lisa Loeb, singing and playing guitar, breasts aching to feed her baby; SO so close to My UPS fantasy!! ” If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I’d like to do, is save every day, till Eternity passes away. . .”- – – OK, I’m creeping myself out now.

  7. Steve says:

Wow, the Loeb really puts it down hard now! That song at the end rocks. Love the parenting talk too.
