Kevin Smith’s MALLRATS to Become a 10 Episode Series

It’s been 21 years since the debut of Kevin Smith‘s second feature-length film, Mallrats. And while Smith himself previously downplayed talk of a sequel to that film, he’s been pushing for Mallrats 2 since last year as a tribute to his friend and film producer James Jacks. Now, according to Smith, Mallrats 2 may not be a feature film at all, but a TV show!

Via Consequence of Sound, Smith made a guest appearance on 93.3 WMMR’s Preston & Steve talk show, where he indicated that Mallrats 2 is now being geared towards television with the support of Universal Pictures.

“[A] couple months ago, we started reconfiguring the idea of doing Mallrats not as a film but as a series,” said Smith. “And Universal and I are just about to close our deal to do Mallrats: The Series. Then we take it out into the world and find a home for it. So, instead of doing a Mallrats movie, I’m going to do 10 episodes of a Mallrats series.”

Smith credited his recent stint as a director for The Flash for reigniting his passion for directing television. He also revealed that his plans for a cinematic sequel were derailed when he finally realized that Universal wouldn’t simply release the title to the first Mallrats and allow him to make the sequel on his own.

Whether Mallrats: The Series actually happens remains to be seen. But there is some president for bringing the sequel to television. Ash vs. Evil Dead and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp are both sequels to their respective film series. But before the Mallrats sequel series can go forward, it would have to find a network or streaming service willing to back it.
