Watch Kelly Slater Surf the ‘Best Man-Made Wave in the World’

Once you’ve proved that you can ride any wave, what should be your next course of action? Well, creating waves, of course. At least, that was the mindset of 11-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater. In the above video, the 43-year-old debuts what he calls the “best made-made wave ever made. No doubt about it.”

The video takes us to an undisclosed location “110 miles from the coast” on December 5, 2015, for the big kahuna’s “premiere.” We see the breaker activated for the first time, and hear Slater compare the experience to “when I won my first title.” Of course, all this is followed by the real excitement: Slater’s testing out of the wave himself, to much success.

According to Slater, he and his company (the aptly named Kelly Slater Wave Company) have been working on this project since 2005. In explaining the lengthy process, Slater says, “We weren’t in a hurry. We could’ve put out an inferior wave years ago, but wanted all that time to do the right thing.” If the video is any indication, they certainly did just that. No word yet on if or when this technology will be released for use to the public.

So what do you think? Any surfing fans out there excited to give this thing a try? Are you hoping they add a man-made shark to provide a little more challenge? Let me know on Twitter, or tell me your favorite Kelly Slater Baywatch episode in the comments below.
