Kate McKinnon & Kumail Nanjiani’s ROOM and CAROL Spirit Awards Parodies

A highlight to any award show is seeing what the hosts (and writers)are able to come up with in order to poke fun at the show itself. This has evolved over the years into some incredibly well done parodies. The Spirit Awards certainly made their mark with last year’s Birdman/Whiplash parody with Kristen Bell and Fred Armisen and continued this year with spoofs of Carol and Room with hosts Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani.

{Note: You can infer some spoiler info of the real films from the following videos so be forewarned.}

Making a parody of such a serious and, let’s face it, messed up film like Room is definitely a gamble. Poking fun at a film about two people being kept in captivity would probably have missed the mark were it not for the comedic talents of McKinnon and Nanjiani. The two finally do gain their freedom but with Kumail lamenting he missed Star Wars, is getting out really that great after all?

How can you go wrong with McKinnon playing Cate Blanchett‘s glamorous role from Carol and Nanjiani pretty much reprising his role as “pushy waiter” from Portlandia? The parody is beautifully edited with real footage from Todd Haynes’ film about a forbidden love which allows for some funny cuts back to the hosts. After McKinnon spells out what’s going on to Kumail and sums up the film as “Clandestine Glove Lunches” she bails on the footage of Rooney Mara in order to join the “sure thing” of Jane Lynch and Wanda Sykes.

If we had our way, we’d have Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani parody every movie in existence. Do we have that in the Nerdist budget? Can we make this happen?

Let us know what you think of the parodies in the comments below!
