Karsh Kale’s “Following Sunlight” is an Uplifting Anthem (Premiere)

When was the last time you were excited to wake up? Probably on a weekend after you had ample time to let your body recover from all the stresses that accrued throughout the preceding week? Maybe you are one of those rare morning people that doesn’t need coffee and thrills to the idea of getting up to watch the sunrise. If, like me, you are not one of those people and need some cajoling to get out of bed, then I think Karsh Kale’s “Following Sunlight” is the perfect tune for wiping the tired from your eyes and adjusting to a new day.

The British producer has a knack for referencing the pop constructions of Bollywood while managing breezy, atmospheric tunes that sound like they would accompany a triumphant climax of a Pixar movie. “Following Sunlight” exists in that space, mixing gleaming strings, a sampled Indian hymn, and a repeated mantra about being on the run and engaging in the titular activity.

Kale told us how the track came to be via email: “Following Sunlight is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It was captured on a cold day in Queens with all of us in the studio. sometimes it all comes out at once as with this one”

From the sound of it, the song just took a little initial momentum and it poured right out. Sometimes, the catalyst is just rolling out of bed and taking those first few crucial steps.

Kale’s forthcoming album Up debuts on January 29.
