JUSTICE LEAGUE Steppenwolf Toy Reveals Alien Appearance

Later this year, Steppenwolf will step up as the main villain in the live-action Justice League movie, which will be the character’s most prominent role ever. All of Steppenwolf’s previous depictions have retained human features, including his face and his distinctive facial hair. However, it appears that the DC Extended Universe is going with a very different approach for the evil New God from Apokolips.

Entertainment Weekly has posted the first official picture of Mattel’s Steppenwolf action figure, and while he retains some of the features of his comic book counterpart, he also appears to be far more alien than human. The Steppenwolf toy is also much bigger than the other Justice League figures, and he will only be available as separate pieces included with the other characters. So you really do have to buy them all to put together Steppenwolf.

For comparison’s sake, here’s another look at Steppenwolf from the comics.

And here is the way that he was depicted by his creator, Jack Kirby.

Ciarán Hinds has indicated that his portrayal of Steppenwolf in Justice League was done entirely in motion capture, which means that the character will be entirely CGI on the big screen. That will account for Steppenwolf’s larger size and allow him to tower over the assembled heroes. Presumably Steppenwolf’s appearance was meant to let him seem even more removed from humanity and to make him more intimidating. It will be interesting to see if the New Gods of New Genesis also share the alien-like features that Steppenwolf has, but it is not clear if any of those characters will make it into this film.
