Will Jared Leto’s Joker Be Back for GOTHAM CITY SIRENS?

When Harley Quinn returns to the big screen, she’ll be bringing some seriously sinister girl power with her. That’s because her solo flick, which has been in development since she stole the show in last summer’s Suicide Squad, was officially announced yesterday and it looks like she won’t be rolling solo after all. Instead, Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie, and director David Ayer will be reuniting to adapt Gotham City Sirens based on the comic of the same name created by Paul Dini. Sirens is the story of Quinn and Batman’s other two big female villains, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, joining forces to claw their way to the top of the male dominated Gotham City underworld. But with such a female centric project, will there be room for any of the DC Dudes in this one? Specifically, will there be room for a certain clown-faced psychotic ex-boyfriend?

Well, Harley’s obsession with the Joker may have been her defining trait in Suicide Squad but it’s hard to see how that would fit into a movie about three female friends committing crimes and getting cocktails in the big city. Obviously Mistah J can’t take the spotlight in Sirens, but would the DCU’s current Joker even settle for second fiddle? Jared Leto was pretty vocal about his displeasure over getting majorly edited out of Suicide Squad. It’s hard to imagine him coming back just to play Mr. Big to Harley’s Carrie Bradshaw. (Sex and the City reference!)

But do we really even need a Joker in this movie? Harley may have started out as little more than in his love struck groupie but in recent years she’s blossomed into her own awesome character, one who doesn’t need a man to define her. One of the biggest disappointments of Suicide Squad is that it reverted to the old, Joker-obsessed version of Harley. Sirens seems like the perfect opportunity to correct that.

Ultimately, we just hope Gotham City Sirens can channel the badass energy of one of our favorite Harley Quinn episodes from Batman: The Animated Series, “Harley and Ivy.” But what do you think? Are you excited for a Harley-spinoff? Let us know in the comments below!
