John Lee Hancock On His Involvement With MALEFICENT and His Next Project

In anticipation of Maleficient, opening in theaters May 30, we’ve been treated to a poster, a few trailers, and Lana del Rey’s rather haunting cover of the classic Sleeping Beauty song “Once Upon A Dream.” However excited about the movie fans have been, reports of a troubled production for first time director Robert Stromberg have circulated so much so that Saving Mr. Banks director John Lee Hancock was brought in during reshoots to help with retooling the opening of the film.

This weekend Nerdist spoke with Hancock on the blue carpet at the 18th annual Art Directors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, and he was able to set the record straight on his involvement with Maleficent. “I was involved for only a couple of weeks. I came in and wrote a couple of scenes because they did some additional photography. But I’m very excited about it, I think it’s terrific,” said Hancock. “[I]t was mostly little stuff – little scenes that kind of explain things. Just little things. No heavy lifting, really. They didn’t need any help.”

As most people involved in production usually know, reshoots are common, especially on big blockbuster productions. Let’s hope we can take Hancock at his word that there were just little tweaks to be done here and there.

Speaking of Hancock, what’s next for The Blind Side director? “I’m supposed to do a movie called The Highwaymen this fall that will shoot in Louisiana. So I’m hoping that all comes together.” Deadline reported in April of last year that The Highwaymen was courting True Detective star Woody Harrelson and Liam Neeson to portray the men who went after Bonnie & Clyde.

Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, hits theaters on May 30, 2014.
