Are we excited for either a Mighty Ducks TV show or a Duke Nukem movie starring John Cena? We answered those unexpected questions on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back, along with breaking down this year’s Oscar nominations.
Joining Jessica Chobot today was producer Derek Johnson, editor Kyle Anderson, and Nerdist News writer Aliza Pearl. But they also asked the resident office hockey expert Derrick Paller to chime in on the show’s first topic of the day, reports of a Mighty Ducks series. What does he think? Were we fans of the original movie? What about the NHL team that was named after them? What sports movies are our favorites? And is this reboot news more or less upsetting than Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool writers wanting to make a new Clue movie?
But if you thought all of that was weird, that’s nothing compared to the rumor John Cena could star in a Duke Nukem big screen adaptation. Does that franchise really need a movie? Would its action and humor be as effective today? Is John Cena the best choice to play the cigar-chomping character? And what other classic video game would make for a great modern film?
Finally, The Shape of Water led all films with 13 Oscar nominations. Which movies are we most excited to see on the list? Which ones got snubbed? Does this year give hope to those of us who love superhero and sci-fi films that they’re getting more recognition? Are we rooting more for The Last Jedi or Logan to pull off the upset in their categories?
Don’t forget to tune in with us every weekday when Nerdist News Talks Back airs live at 1:00 p.m. PT on our YouTube and Alpha channels, that way you can be a part of the conversation. And because we never go away, you never have to worry about us doing some weird reboot.
We still want to hear from you about today’s topics, so talk back to us in the comments below.
