John Carpenter Unveils New Song And Track List For His Debut Album, LOST THEMES

If you follow our weekly horror round up “Horror Happenings,” you know that last month while presenting a screening of his classic horror film Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis, John Carpenter casually mentioned that an album full of his “lost themes” would be released at some point in the near future. Information has trickled in over the last few weeks that the album would be called Lost Themes and would be released on Sacred Bones Records. As mentioned in yesterdays “Horror Happenings,” the first track, titled “Vortex” was recently released online (listen below) and is pretty spooky. Now, we have the release date of the album and the track list, too!

Set to hit stores on February 3, 2015, Lost Themes was the product of collaborations among Carpenter, Cody Carpenter (of Ludrium), and Daniel Davies  (who scored I, Frankenstein). Though Carpenter riffed on a lot of the dark moods that have characterized his previous work, he says that he had much more freedom to explore on his debut album.

Unlike Carpenter’s other soundtracks that his fans know and love, like the scores to The Fog, Escape from New York and Big Trouble In Little China, his debut album will be more about “having fun.” Carpenter announced in a statement, “It can be both great and bad to score over images, which is what I’m used to. Here there were no pressures. No actors asking me what they’re supposed to do. No crew waiting. No cutting room to go to. No release pending. It’s just fun.”

Here’s the track list:

Vortex
Obsidian
Fallen
Domain
Mystery
Abyss
Wraith
Purgatory
Night

What do you think, friends? Are you excited for a whole album of Carpenter’s music? Are you digging “Vortex?” I know I’ve had it on loop for the last 48 hours… Let’s hear it in the comments below and on Twitter!
