First Look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Makeup

There are supposedly three Joker movies in the mix at Warner Bros., but only one of them is currently filming. Director Todd Phillips’ Joker flick is putting Joaquin Phoenix in the title role of Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime. We’ve already seen a few images from the set, but this story is set years before Joker became Batman’s eternal adversary. Phoenix’s character looked relatively normal in those pics. But now, Phillips has offered fans the first real look at Phoenix in full Joker mode. Today’s Nerdist News is breaking it all down.

Join host and Arkham Asylum’s newest doctor, Jessica Chobot, as she examines the details of the super creepy Joker video. Phoenix’s Joker appears to be a step back from Jared Leto’s “Damaged” Joker from Suicide Squad. It even reminds us of Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, minus the scars. But it’s not a carbon copy of any Joker we’ve seen before. This is a Joker who could almost pass for a real clown, if not for that look he flashes the camera at the last second.

What can we learn from this brief camera test? First, it appears Phillips may be avoiding the part of the Joker’s origin that had him taking a dive into toxic chemicals. He’s still simply a man wearing makeup, at least at this stage in his life. Considering Phillips has already given his Joker a name, Arthur Fleck, he probably isn’t worried about veering from the source material. This video also makes us wonder if Phillips is trying to evoke John Wayne Gacy, an all-too real serial killer who had a “Patches the Clown” alter ego. Now there’s a killer clown!

Does the new Joker video have you excited about Phoenix’s take on the character? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
