Jesse Quick Cast for CW’s THE FLASH

The Flash series on the CW is in that rarified space of being a runaway success, so they don’t have to tiptoe around being too “comic booky” or too “out there” anymore. Going into their second season, they can pretty much do whatever the heck they want. And that seems to include adding all the other speedsters from the pages of the comics.

Any longtime reader of The Flash series at DC knows that a huge part of the appeal of the comics was the extended “Flash Family.” Aside from Barry Allen, there are Flashes Wally West and Jay Garrick, both of whom are joining the series. And now you can add Jesse Quick to that list, because the most important female speedster in the DCU is joining the show as well.

Newcomer Violett Beane has just been cast as Jesse Chambers, a.k.a. Jesse Quick, for the second season of the show. According to the official description, the TV version of Jesse Quick is “a brilliant but quirky college student who gets caught up in the battle between The Flash and Zoom.”

Getting caught up in a battle between Flash and Zoom is probably how she gets her speed force abilities in the show, since in the comics, Jesse Chambers is the daughter of Golden Age superheroes Liberty Belle and Johnny Quick. As far as we know, there were no Golden Age heroes in the TV universe (unless, of course, she’s from Jay Garrick’s Earth-2, which is totally possible).

In the comics, Jesse originally gained her powers when her father Johnny Quick taught her the formula that allowed him draw energy from the Speed Force, 3×2(9yz)4a. (Yeah, that never mades sense to me either.) She also briefly took her mother’s identity as Liberty Belle, and has been a Titan, a member of the Justice Society, and the Justice League.

Will Ms. Quick be the last speedster to join Barry Allen’s world this season? Who knows, but there are still some major Speed Force users that have yet to be announced for the series, like Max Mercury, Impulse, XS, and even John Fox, the Flash from the future. Basically, there’s no shortage of potential speedsters to come in this season of the show, or even the next five seasons if the show goes that long!
