Jenny Lewis’ New Band Made Their TV Debut on Colbert

Politeness be damned. When something is really, really, really nice, why can’t we just call it what it is: nice as f*ck. Take Jenny Lewis’ new supergroup trio, Nice as F*ck (with Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster and The Like’s Tennessee Thomas), for instance. When Lewis’ vocals shine through—by way of that salient voice that’s been matured and refined in Rilo Kiley and in a bunch of great solo albums—well, let’s just say the name is warranted.

Last night, NAF made their network television debut on The Late Show. Colbert introduced the three women, who all wore green jackets over shirts that said, “Give a Damn.” They opened with the chugging peace-and-love anthem, “Door,” before transitioning into a bit of their politically charged track, “Guns.”

Both songs appear on Nice as F*ck’s self-titled debut record that they surprise released about a month ago. The trio first appeared together at an unannounced Bernie Sanders benefit in New York, and they’ve driven all kinds of hype since then. Joshua Tillman (a.k.a. Father John Misty) called them “objectively the best all-female band in the last 25 years” in a long, bizarre, and incredible essay that has since become NAF’s bio.

Could this be the socially minded, all-female group that finally fills the shoes long worn by Sleater-Kinney? S-K’s return to prominence in 2015, when they released LP No Cities to Love, was at least partially due to the fact that “[important issues had] been laying dormant and doesn’t seem like anyone else is picking it up’.” Maybe Nice as F*ck got the message. We certainly hope so, because we need more people like that.
