Jeff Buckley Covers the Smiths’ “I Know It’s Over” in Poignant New Video

We were all surprised when an unheard Bon Iver track surfaced on Tuesday–and then a music video for a previously unheard track from the late Jeff Buckley materialized.

In 1997, Jeff Buckley wandered into a moonlit channel of the Mississippi and never reemerged. He left behind just one album, Grace, and it remains a monument of the singer-songwriter canon. Along with seven originals and a well-known interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s masterful song/prayer, “Hallelujah,” Grace contains two other covers: James Shelton’s “Lilac Wine” and Benjamin Britten’s “Corpus Christi Carol (For Roy).” Buckley does an excellent job reworking each piece, adding his own haunting touch without detracting from the works’ original beauty.

Now, the Buckley camp has just unveiled a video for the artist’s cover of the Smiths’ “I Know It’s Over.” The “new” song is part of a larger project called You and I. Sony Music, while combing through their archives in preparation for Grace’s 20th Anniversary edition reissue, stumbled upon a bunch of unheard Buckley material. They’ve since turned that material into an album that will feature more covers and two pieces of original music: a song titled “Dream of You” and the first-ever studio recording of “Grace.”

Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, oversaw the creation of You and I – available March 11. Until its arrival, check out the new music video and drool over the album’s playlist:

“Just Like A Woman” (Bob Dylan cover)
“Everyday People” (Sly & The Family Stone cover)
“Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Cryin” (First recorded by Louis Jordan)
“Grace”
“Calling You” (Jevetta Steele cover)
“Dream Of You And I”
“The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” (The Smiths cover)
“Poor Boy Long Way From Home” (Traditional blues song, Bukka White cover)
“Night Flight” (Led Zeppelin cover)
“I Know It’s Over” (The Smiths cover)
