Jay Pharoah Drops a Track from His Upcoming Mixtape PHORNICATION

Before co-hosting this year’s MTV VMAs, former Saturday Night Live star Jay Pharoah told a Billboard reporter—video above—that he was working on a mixtape that “is going to be a dope project” and that he “will not let [us] down.” Cut to two days later, and he’s already delivered the first track off his new mixtape, Phornication.

The track, “Freedom Freestyle,” is an energetic preview of a mixtape—recently reported on by Pitchfork—that seems like it will follow in the same vein as The Resurrection EP released in 2014. Like The Resurrection, Phornication will—according to “Freestyle”—feature straight tracks, rather than spoofs like “Bad Kisser” (a play on Usher’s “Good Kisser”), and “Problems.”

Although Pharoah’s made a name for himself on SNL—especially by nailing a wide range of celebrity impressions, including Kanye West, President Obama, and a stunning Shaquille O’Neal—he appears to be branching out now. It’s been announced that he won’t be returning for the 42nd season of SNL, and this mixtape, produced by Myles Williams and Roc, helps to reaffirm his entry into the rap world.

“When you hear the tracks you’ll know why [I named the mixtape] Phornication,” Pharoah told the Billboard reporter, “I go all in, no holds barred.”

What do you think about Pharoah’s new track and his branching out into the rap world? Are you ready for some more of this fire, or are you hoping for more tracks like “Good Kisser”? Be a good commenter and let us know your thoughts below!
