Fancy Japanese Notepads Reveal Hidden Papercraft Surprises Inside

Here in the U.S., we’ve become quite adept at using Post-It notes—those peel-away, sticky things you put on the fridge or book pages to remind yourself of something or other—to create larger works of art. Sure, technology can replace their function, but it can’t create giant paper Oregon Trail murals when you’re bored. Japan, however, has one-upped us again, by making the notepad itself into a work of art…and a hidden one, too.

The Omoshiroi block, here, which we first noticed at Rocket News 24 and then for sale at Japan Trend Shop, may look like just a regular notepad at first…

But peel away the pages, and…

…a papercraft sculpture begins to reveal itself. And some of them are extremely complex.

Not to mention, the notes you peel away also have little cut-out images in them.

We aren’t the only ones who noticed, as they’ve been selling out all over Japan, and the website for Triad, Inc., which makes them, is currently down as of this writing, probably due to unexpected demand. Japan Trend Shop anticipates having supplies come February 1st, but they might be optimistic. Still, the wait time will give you time to save your pennies; unlike regular Post-It blocks, the Omoshiro will run you around $119 U.S. You’re really paying for the art, and the fact that it comes with tear-off notes too is just gravy. Or ponzu. Whichever.

In the meantime, you can admire from afar all the insane detail via Triad, Inc’s Instagram account.

Would you be able to resist tearing all the notes off immediately to find the surprise? Or do you have the patience for slow reveals? Paper the comments below with some notations of your own!
