Has any mixtape gotten this much exposure ever in the history of mixtapes? While a lot of movies have soundtracks made up of classic rock or pop hits, almost none have been the exact mix used in a movie, and certainly very rarely one as popular as this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which I’d like to reiterate, we’re STILL talking about months after it’s been released. And director James Gunn is keen to make us keep talking about both the film and the Awesome Mixes thanks to constant updates. A few weeks ago, he told us about what was effectively Awesome Mix Vol 0, and now he’s taken to Facebook again for what was the original version of the Awesome Mix Vol. 1, the pre-production lineup if you will.

To usher in his new Facebook like page, Gunn bestowed upon us the original mix (on CD, he reluctantly reveals) that he sent to Chris Pratt to listen to backwards and forwards to know by heart just like Star-Lord would have done. While a lot of the playlist is the same, and David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” is included but wasn’t actually added until post production, there are a few very interesting even deeper cuts from ’70s rock, pop, and soul nostalgia. The complete list is below, with the replaced songs notated with an asterisk.

Of all of them, I’m particularly upset at the deletion of Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” because glam rock can be awesome. But, come on! Cheap Trick? Electric Light Orchestra? Pilot? (I don’t know who Pilot is, full disclosure.) All would have made for an awesome addition to mix. Here’s what Gunn said in the Facebook post about the omissions.

“Some of these songs were in the first cut of the movie – the mean blue guard danced through the prison listening to Magic on Quill’s headphones, and Livin Thing featured in a montage in the Milano after the gang left the prison. We shot Quill singing “Never Been to Spain” at the Nova guards in an aggressive manner when he was having his mug shot taken, but the winding-up-the-finger gag worked better, so it never made the cut. The rest were never really in, but I thought this would give you a good idea of the complete Awesome Mix to which young Peter Quill might have lived his life.”

I really can’t wait for the sequel if for no other reason than to know what else is on Peter Quill, and by extension James Gunn’s, Awesome Mix Vol. 2, besides “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “I Want You Back,” of course.
