If you ever want to get Jake Gyllenhaal upset, just bring up Chicken Littles. When the KFC treatsâa chicken nugget slider slathered in mayo, cheese, and deliciousnessâcame off the menu, Gyllenhaal was devastated, going so far as to write a letter of complaint for the company’s colossal mistake. “When they discontinued them, I was kinda flabbergasted because they’re kind of one of the greatest thing ever invented.”
Thankfully, Gyllenhaal was able to use that pain as inspirationâwell, to a degreeâfor his latest film Demolition. In it, our leading lad Davis (Gyllenhaal) begins to slowly unravel from the death of his wife… in a series of strongly worded (and deeply personal) complaint letters to a vending machine company. The Jean-Marc Vallée directed film also stars Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper, and Judah Lewis and is, according to Vallée, “the most rock ‘n’ roll film I’ve ever made.”
Tune in as our own Dan Casey gets the Demolition (and chicken) lowdown from director Jean-Marc Vallée and star Jake Gyllenhaal when they stopped by Banger’s in Austin in the video above.
Have you ever written a complaint letter? Are you as upset about the loss of Chicken Littles as Jake clearly is/was? Let us know all about it in the comments below. And be sure to head on over to our SXSW page to check out all the interviews we did while we were down in Austin. It’s like being in Texas without having to actually travel to Texas!
