J.J. is back back! But what does “The Return of the Abrams” mean for the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy? We went deep into the galaxy far, far away on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back to answer that question, along with what to make of Patty Jenkins record-setting Wonder Woman 2 deal, as well as breaking down the first full trailer for James Franco’s Tommy Wiseau movie.
Joining Jedi Master host Jessica Chobot today was Mothership writer Amy Vorpahl, the one-and-only Andrew Bowser, and Nerdist’s Director of Development Brendon Schulze. First up was the big news that Lucasfilm has decided to take a director double dip, but not with The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson like we thought, but instead with The Force Awakens‘ J.J. Abrams. Was this the right (safe) call for a studio struggling to find directors they can work with, or does this compound the “retread” problem some people had with The Force Awakens? And what answers do we expect to get from Johnson and Abrams as the Skywalker family saga comes to a close?
There was even more big director news to talk about today though, because Patty Jenkins (finally) agreed to a new deal to direct the Wonder Woman sequel, and it’s the biggest for a female director ever. Good. But as impossible as it seems, was there anyone who would have been a better choice? And what does everyone hope to see in a non-origin movie, even if its reported Cold War setting seems to introduce timeline issues from Batman v Superman?
Finally, we got a full trailer for The Disaster Artist, starring James Franco as Tommy Wiseau, about the making of his cult-classic disaster The Room. Does it look any good? Did anyone read the book the movie is based on? And what other dramatized take down of a movie flop should be next? Those questions are tearing us apart! (Not really.)
But remember to be like J.J. Abrams and return to Nerdist News Talks Back every weekday, live at 1:00p.m. PST on our YouTube and Alpha channels. It’s always more fun to talk about new Star Wars director news live, even if there always seems to be so much of it.
In the meantime,we want you to talk back to us about today’s topics in our comments section below.
