It’s Blood, Sand, Oil, Fire, and Fury in the MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Trailer

Next year, I want to see all of your best Immortan Joe cosplay, people. The visually-striking mutant villain (I think) from Mad Max: Fury Road is just one of many arresting elements in this first trailer for the post-apocalyptic sequel.

Director George Miller returns for this extended chase movie with Bronson and The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy taking over for Mel Gibson as the desert anti-hero Max Rockatansky. Hardy’s joined by Charlize Theron as the cyborg-armed convoy leader Imperator Furiosa, with Mad Max‘s Hugh Keays-Byrne trading in his character Toe Cutter for Immortan Joe.

The trailer was used to bookend the footage I reported on yesterday during the Warner Bros. presentation: it’s all set up for Max’s capture and imprisonment by the white-painted marauders with Theron and Hardy not really sharing any scenes until the end.

And without being reductive or anything, it’s all completely and gloriously nuts. From the vehicle designs, which pretty much share continuity with the rough and wrecked hardware from The Road Warrior and Thunderdome to some of the inexplicable elements like, well, Immortan Joe, who seems like some crazy blend of The Humungous and Aunty Entity.

There’s so much here that’s kind of hard to parse in what we’ve been hearing up to this point will be an extended chase movie, but Miller has done some crazy/beautiful world-building here, and count me in as someone really hyped to check this out.

Mad Max: Fury Road will be in theaters on May 15, 2015.
