Iron Patriot Cupcakes

Happy Fifth of July! Keep celebrating the day of independence by bringing all-American sweets to your Sunday BBQ, or to work on Monday. Red, white, and blue cupcakes get dressed up like Rhodey Rhodes when they’re topped with a Marvel comics Iron Patriot sugar cookie.

Edible silver spray won’t lead you to Valhalla but it will make these cookies shine bright like real armor. A touch of blue and red and these cookies turn into the ultimate in patriotic desserts. A cookie and a cupcake in one? You’ve just made this country proud.

Iron Patriot Cookies
you’ll need:
Red, white and blue cupcakes, frosted
-Iron Man cookie cutter

ingredients:
– 3 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
– pinch of salt
– 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
– 1 cup sugar
– 1 egg
– 1 teaspoon vanilla
– navy blue food gel dye
– edible Wilton Silver Mist
– red icing

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar until combined.

Add the egg and the vanilla.

Slowly add in the dry ingredients until the dough comes together. The dough will form quickly and when it starts to pull away from the bowl, it’s ready.

Split the dough in two and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill until you are ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats.

Take about 1/2 cup of dough and dye it navy blue. Set aside.

Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use the Iron Man cutter to cut out the cookies. Cut a notch out of the top of the head, and add a piece of the blue dyed dough.

Transfer onto the prepped baking sheets and bake for 10 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack.

Once the cookies are cool, cover the blue area and spray the rest of the cookie with the edible silver spray. Let dry completely.

With a #3 tip and red icing, outline the blue notch at the top of the head, and outline the eyes.

Place on top of the frosted red, white and blue cupcakes to serve.
