The Russos Reveal Why Spider-Man Took So Long to Disappear In INFINITY WAR

Now that Avengers: Infinity War has been released digitally, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have used the commentary track to expand upon the creative choices made in the film. While offering their perspective on the story, the Russos revealed why the Hulk was so reluctant to resurface and expanded upon the physical price Thanos had to pay at the end of the movie. In today’s Nerdist News, we’re looking at the Russo’s official explanation about Spider-Man‘s final Infinity War scene and how it came about.

Join host and the Black Order’s last surviving member Jessica Chobot as she takes us back to the emotional sequence in which Thanos dusted half of the universe with a snap of his Infinity Gauntlet. Almost every hero who fell victim to the Snappening turned to dust within a matter of seconds. But not Spider-Man. Aunt May’s favorite nephew managed to hold on for almost half a minute before succumbing.

During the commentary, Joe Russo indicated the scene was originally much shorter. However, it was expanded to pull more emotions out of Tom Holland’s performance (he improvised in the scene). It had been previously suggested that Spider-Man’s spider sense and his powers helped him temporarily fight off his demise. The Russos confirmed that theory and added Peter Parker’s child-like reaction and refusal to simply accept his fate also played a part.

It’s pretty much a given Spider-Man and the rest of the dusted will be restored in Avengers 4. However, we’re very curious to learn if Peter will remember his demise once he returns to the land of the living. If so, the trauma could be explored in Spider-Man: Far From Home next year.
