INDEPENDENCE DAY 3 Could Take the Battle to Outer Space

Outspoken director Roland Emmerich may not always be right on the money with the things he says, but he’s always interesting to listen to. Days after his years-in-the-making Independence Day: Resurgence hit theaters to mixed reviews and wanting box office returns, Emmerich opined about the elements that may constitute a threequel to the alien invasion series—which, if you’ve seen Resurgence, you know might just be in the cards.

And if you haven’t seen Independence Day: Resurgence, the following does contain spoilers re: the film’s conclusion and very final moments.

Speaking with Empire, Emmerich confirmed what viewers extrapolated from the excited ramblings of Dr. Brakish Okun, played by Brent Spiner, in the very last scene of the film. Okun predicted that the technological advancements bequeathed upon Earth by a benevolent extraterrestrial visitor (that giant talking Siri ball) would give the human race the edge in taking to the skies and fighting back against the evil aliens who caused them so much trouble in both the original Independence Day and Resurgence.

Says Emmerich, “The next one will be an intergalactic journey. It’ll be [set] maybe a year or two later, not 20 years [on]. I want to maintain this group of people, especially the young characters, and Jeff [Goldblum] and Brent [Spiner] will take part in it. It’ll be fun to keep that group together.”

The director goes onto ruminate on some of the science-fiction elements he’d introduce to the Independence Day franchise in a third film. “I imagine them now going in one of these ships they’ve rebuilt into a wormhole,” he says. “I think it’ll be the classic of going into space but it has to be about Earth, and we have a really good idea for that.”

While Resurgence already saw humankind endeavor space exploration to an advanced degree, what with some pretty high-octane ships and lunar industrialization, the as-of-yet-only-hypothetical Independence Day 3 seems to up the ante in a big way. Would you like to see Emmerich take his alien-fighting series to other planets? Let us know!
