Netflix has recently released two character posters for their original film project, Beasts Of No Nation starring Idris Elba. The film, adapted from a novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala and directed by True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga, tells the story of a young boy named Agu who is captured and forced to fight as a child soldier in an African country’s civil war. Elba will play Commandant, the rebel warlord that kidnaps Agu, played by newcomer Abraham Attah, and trains him to become a soldier.
Take a look at both characters in these transformative poster sets from Netflix:
It has always been hard to not like Idris Elba. Even as a mouthy pretender who gets made an example of in American Gangster, Elba has always brought a charm to his characters that makes them a joy to watch. It will be interesting to finally see him tackle a character that, we assume, has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Even so, he will bring his best to Beasts Of No Nation, and we will surely see a performance that will not soon be forgotten.
Many streaming service originals have won awards before, but one can only wonder if Beasts Of No Nation, as well as its two stars, will be remembered come nomination time. Beyond that, would the Academy be willing to nominate a Netflix-original when it’s Oscar time?
