Music Geek Track Of The Day: Idris Elba On The Remix Of Skepta’s ‘Shut Down’

Boy, there are so many reasons to love Idris Ebla. The dashing Brit has been proving for a while on both big and small screen that he is a badass. With credits like The Wire, Luther, Prometheus, and Thor under his belt, there is probably very little this man couldn’t do if he wanted to.

Case and point, Elba performs on the remix of “Shut Down” with London-based rapper and grime artist Skepta. What is grime? It’s a hip-hop style Skepta helped pioneer in the early 2000s that is very heavy in the drum and bass track, and usually involves a quicker tempo to the rapping. Take a listen to the SoundCloud link below to see what I mean, but be warned that the song is NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

More like Rhyme-dall, am I right? No one was sure if Skepta was serious or not when he tweeted that he had netted Elba for the remix of his song, but obviously the proof is out there now. Some may not know that this is far from Elba’s first venture into the world of hip-hop. Elba has released several EPs of his own under the name Driis, sometimes Big Driis or King Driis, and worked as a DJ around London. He even DJ’d the NBA All-Star parties in 2007, and for a show on BET called Rising Icons. Elba has also made appearances on tracks from Jay-Z for American Gangster (it probably helped that he was in the movie as well) and the album W.A.R. by Pharoahe Monch. These were acting performances instead of musical, though.

So, what do you think of the track? Interested in hearing more from Idris Elba, a.k.a. Driis? Let us know in the comments below!
