Idris Elba Calls His STAR TREK BEYOND Villain ‘Groundbreaking’

For the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba will follow in the footsteps of Benedict Cumberbatch and Eric Bana as the third big screen villain to face the crew of the Starship Enterprise in the reboot era. And while details about Elba’s character are scarce, Elba seems to be particularly excited about his role in the new film.

“Simon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character,” said Elba. “You’ve never seen me play a character like this…I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like ‘he’s a guy who wants to end the world,’ there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that.”

“It’s quite an interesting journey,” added Elba. “Which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ’classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone.”

Here’s what we do know about Elba’s character: he is brand new to the Star Trek franchise…and he is not a Klingon. In fact, all three of the Star Trek reboot films have steered away from using the Klingons as the main enemy. But that’s bound to change at some point in the future.

Elba also said that he’s “been doing 18-hour days. It’s tough work, but I’m looking forward to people seeing this film.”

Star Trek Beyond will be released on July 22, 2016.
