For the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba will follow in the footsteps of Benedict Cumberbatch and Eric Bana as the third big screen villain to face the crew of the Starship Enterprise in the reboot era. And while details about Elbaâs character are scarce, Elba seems to be particularly excited about his role in the new film.
âSimon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character,â said Elba. âYouâve never seen me play a character like this…I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like ‘heâs a guy who wants to end the world,’ thereâs no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, thereâs a slightly different twist to that.â
âItâs quite an interesting journey,â added Elba. âWhich I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the âclassic bad guy is a classic bad guyâ tone.â
Hereâs what we do know about Elbaâs character: he is brand new to the Star Trek franchise…and he is not a Klingon. In fact, all three of the Star Trek reboot films have steered away from using the Klingons as the main enemy. But thatâs bound to change at some point in the future.
Elba also said that heâs âbeen doing 18-hour days. Itâs tough work, but Iâm looking forward to people seeing this film.â
Star Trek Beyond will be released on July 22, 2016.
