It is a shame that those with visual impairments are not able to enjoy the premiere of Daredevil on Netflix along with the rest of us. It isn’t every day a blind superhero comes along and proves that impairments don’t make people helpless, and that is truly a message that should be shared with everyone and anyone. Netflix apparently realized this too, since yesterday they revealed that they will be including audio descriptions as an audio option for various titles on their streaming service. Daredevil will be one series that will offer this service, and over the coming weeks other Netflix originals like House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Marco Polo, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will be gaining this feature as well.
Netflix also states they are working alongside studios and other content providers to make more of the shows and movies on their website available to stream with the audio description option. At the moment the service will only be available in English and through the website when viewed on a computer, but they also state there are plans to make it available in more languages and through applications as well. This means for now SmartTVs, gaming consoles, tablets, and phones will not be able to use the service until a later date.
It is interesting to see Daredevil usher in this service to Netflix along with their new show. It was only a few years ago that Marvel comics relaunched their Daredevil comic book series and released the first issue as a free audio comic for the visually impaired. It seems both Marvel and Netflix are doing Matt Murdock proud with this one.
What do you think about the service? Plan on giving it a try on an episode of Daredevil like I am? Let us know in the comments below.
