Hundreds of Real Doctors Have Famous Fictional Doctor Names

Dr. Who? Yep. Dr. Dre? Check. Dr. Frankenstein? Of course, just make sure to pronounce it correctly.

Medical databases are goldmines of information. In them reside a good portion of our collective knowledge on how the body works, what to do when it goes wrong, and what we are hoping to achieve as organisms. But you can also crack yourself up searching medical databases for the names of fictional doctors. Did you know there are a ton of Dr. Peppers? None of these people had a great time at medical school.

PubMed, a repository of medical studies run by the National Institutes of Health, is one such database that lets you search for scientific papers by author name. Here are some real doctors that have to enter patient rooms and introduce themselves as:

Sure, the real Dr. Gordon Freeman doesn’t look quite like the crowbar-wielding protagonist of the Half-Life video game series, but it’s still endlessly amusing. And there may be more fictional doctors to be found in other databases for fields such as biology or physics, but I’ll leave that search up to you.

What fictional-named real doctors can you find? Share your results below!
