Holy Holiday weekend, Batman! There’s a comic book movie that could conceivably be a contender in this year’s Oscar race…and it’s not Captain America: Civil War or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice! Instead, it’s Deadpool. Yes, 20th Century Fox’s foul-mouted, fourth-wall-breaking flick, which also happens to be the first superhero movie with a pegging scene. You may have laughed at Ryan Reynolds‘ hilarious “For Your Consideration” video, but the truth is, Deadpool really does have a shot at wider Oscar recognition. Find out how in today’s Nerdist News!
Join Nerdist News host and Deadpool 2‘s top choice to play Cable, Jessica Chobot, as she looks at the bizarre set of circumstances that have potentially put Deadpool on the Oscar shortlist. Remember, this was a movie that Fox resisted making for several years before the test footage leaked online and rescued Deadpool from development hell. The fact that it went on to become one of 2016’s biggest blockbusters would have been reward enough. Winning an Academy Award would just be the icing on the cake.
When it comes to the Oscars, the thing that you have to remember is that the top films are chosen by the actors, the directors, the writers, the cinematographers, et al, that actually work in the movie business. That’s why Golden Globe results don’t always predict Oscar nods. Fortunately, Deadpool has already lined up nominations from the Director’s Guild, the Writers’ Guild, and the Producer’s Guild. The fact that Deadpool placed so highly in those means that the same voters may end up supporting its inclusion on the eventual Best Picture list, especially if this is one of the years that includes more than five movies as finalists for the industry’s biggest award. That doesn’t mean that Deadpool is a lock for the gold, but stranger things have happened!
Would you like to see Deadpool go all the way in the Oscar race? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
