Horror Happenings: POLTERGEIST Date Change, Plot Details for DARKSIDE and More!

Happy Sunday, Horror Hounds! Welcome back to Horror Happenings, our weekly round up of the scariest entertainment news. This week we have plot details for the upcoming Joe Hill produced Tales From Darkside reboot, a trailer for the latest demonic possession flick The Vatican Tapes and it looks like the Sam Raimi produced Poltergeist remake will be headed to theaters sooner than later. Let’s get to it!

Sam Raimi-Produced Poltergeist Coming to Theaters Earlier Than Expected!

After finally sneaking a peek at the trailer for the long awaited Sam Raimi-produced Poltergeist reboot back in February, this week it was announced that the film, starring Sam Rockwell, Rosemary DeWitt and Jared Harris, will be making its way to theaters a few months early! Originally slated for release in July, Gil Keenan’s (Monster House) Poltergeist will hit theaters on May 22 in 3D.

I’m still looking forward to this one, remake or not. I’m a huge fan of Keenan’s and if anyone could do justice to a modernized telling of the Poltergeist story, it’s him. Now it looks like we’ll be able to see a little earlier than expected if he was truly able to put his own spin on the horror classic.

More Demonic Possession Coming Your Way in First Trailer for The Vatican Tapes

Yahoo debuted the trailer for Mark Neveldine’s new horror flick, The Vatican Tapes, starring Michael Peña and Djimon Hounsou as priests who are working to solve Satan’s master plan through reviewing evidence of possessions and exorcisms. The pair focus on a young woman, played by Olivia Taylor Dudley, whom they suspect to be possessed by the anti-Christ. The film also stars Bates Motel‘s Kathleen Robertson and Hemlock Grove‘s Dougray Scott. The Vatican Tapes hits theaters on May 22 as well.

The CW’s Darkside Reboot Casts Lead, Plot Details Revealed

Deadline reports that Kris Lemche has been cast as the lead in The CW pilot Darkside, the Joe Hill-penned reboot of the popular horror anthology series Tales From The Darkside. Lemche will play Newman, the one character who is a series regular. According to Deadline, Newman is “a man with his own desperate, wrenching secrets.” Apparently he “knows exactly what’s causing the terrifying darkside events that drive the series. What he doesn’t know is how to stop them.” Spooky!

At San Diego Comic-Con last summer, we spoke with Hill about his take on the classic TV series. He explained it to us, saying, “In the case of the new Darkside, you’re getting stories that are individual, stand alone, great, creepy stories but it’s also like a Rubik’s Cube where the parts are turning and then after three or four episodes hopefully the viewer will go, ‘Oh wait a minute! Oh, this is all one story,’ and so gradually over the course of the first season it is revealed that all these individual stories of horror, fantasy and wonder all have a connecting thread that tells one overarching story. I hope it works.”

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will executive produce through their television production company K/O Paper Products.
