This week in Horror Happenings, new details on Paranormal Activity 5 are confirmed, we get a first look at WEtv’s new supernatural series South of Hell and NBC pulls the plug on Constantine’s production a little early; is the freshman genre series doomed?

Confirmed: Paranormal Activity 5 In 3-D

The road to a proper Paranormal Activity 5 has been a bumpy one. After a less than impressive fourth installment, shifting release dates, turning the fifth film into the series into a spin-off (one that I quite enjoyed, for the most part), shifting release dates again and finally settling on March 13, 2015, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension will also be converted in post to 3D.

I am admittedly a big fan of most of this franchise. I’ve written about it here on Nerdist and I think the only big misstep they’ve made was the fourth film. That being said, this 3D plus found footage idea seems like a bad one. Isn’t the whole point of these movies, in theory, of course, that they maybe sort of could be real? If so, why the heck are we watching them in 3D?? Also, I’ve been arguing for a while that the franchise should drop the found footage angle and do a straight Grandma Lois prequel and if they can give me 3D, they can give me traditional filmmaking, right? Bloody Disgusting, who first reported the news, that Paramount may actually be testing the 3D/found footage combo on audiences for the upcoming but super secret Friday the 13th movie. We shall see…

First Look at the Blumhouse, Eli Roth Produced Television Horror Drama South Of Hell

Back in May, we told you about the new scripted horror series about possession and demons in the American south coming to WE tv from producer Eli Roth and Blumhouse Productions. A few months later, American Beauty actress Mena Suvari was announced as the lead, and production has been underway in Charleston, SC with the series premiering sometime in 2015 and Nerdist visited the set just a few weeks ago with our special report coming soon. Now, we’ve gotten a first look at the series courtesy of TV Guide Magazine. The caption also specifies that episode directors include Ti West and Jennifer Lynch. Producer Roth directed the pilot.

NBC’s Constantine In Trouble? Network Stops Production After 13th Episode

Beware if you be a genre show on NBC. Amidst generally favorable reviews and decent numbers given the show airs on Friday night, NBC’s adaptation of the Hellblazer comic series, Constantine, has had its first series order halted at 13 episodes therefore ensuring it will not receive a partial or full season pick up, Deadline is reporting. The good news is that those 13 episodes were ordered in the first place so the show will still be able to tell its full season one arc. This has fans nervous that NBC will ultimately can the series although those on the inside don’t seem to think that is what’s going on.

“Fannibals” know the struggle of the genre bubble show on the Peacock network, watching Bryan Fuller’s brilliant series Hannibal, also exiled on Friday nights, constantly faced with threats of cancellation despite glowing reviews from critics and fans alike. NBC also cancelled their Friday night Dracula adaptation fairly quickly but boy, are they on team Grimm. For whatever reason, NBC really likes Grimm…

Deadline is also confirming that Constantine will ride out the rest of its first season in the Friday at 10PM time slot.
