HORIZON: ZERO DAWN is Robot Dinosaur Hunting at Its Finest

Last year, Sony debuted a game that looked like Ygritte from Game of Thrones hunting robotic dinosaurs in a sprawling open world and it was instantly named one of Nerdist’s Best Games of E3 2015. That game, Horizon: Zero Dawn, was recently delayed, but based on what Sony showed tonight at their E3 press conference, it will be worth the wait.

The gameplay demo showcased all the hard work that Killzone developer Guerilla Games has been putting into the third-person action-adventure franchise. As Aloy, you stalk the plains in search of mechanical beasts to hunt and plunder for parts. However, as your mission takes you deeper into the valley, Aloy comes across another robot corrupting a neutral robotic beast. The encounter quickly turns deadly as Aloy is forced to use every trick up her sleeve to defeat the dastardly duo. She quickly dispatches the corrupted robot by jamming an arrow through its skull. However, the corrupting robot takes more finesse.

By using an elaborate weapon wheel and a variety of traps, Aloy is able to agilely and swiftly dispatch the big bad ‘bot. The combat, as well as the in-game crafting, feels fluid and looks as though it will put players through their paces if they hope to emerge from the wilds unscathed.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is available February 28, 2017.
