Nostalgia is big business these days. And not just in the worlds of movies and television;Â now it’s even spilled overâpardon the punâinto the world of food and drink products. Similarly to how Pepsi recently released Crystal Pepsi to tie-in with the anniversary of Back to the Future, or how General Mills releases the old Monster Cereals every year at Halloween, now it appears that Coca-Cola is bringing back another favorite from the ’80s and ’90s: the Ghostbusters-themed Hi-C Ecto Cooler.
Just a few months ahead of the release of the new Ghostbusters film, the Coca-Cola company filed a trademark patent back in September for the orange-tangerine flavored drink, which was then approved in November. The old Hi-C Ecto Cooler had the animated version of Slimer from The Real Ghostbusters cartoon on the front of the package. If Slimer, or a new version of Slimer, appears in the new Ghostbusters movie, I’d say expect the same, although Coca-Cola would get several cool points if they just kept the ’80s cartoon version of Slimer on the front instead.
The green-tinged Ecto-Cooler first debuted back in 1987, at the height of the success of the cartoon series, and was available all the way until 2001, when it was re-named as the generic sounding “Shoutin’ Orange Green.” Eventually, around 2007, even that version of the drink vanished from store shelves, after being renamed yet again. Fans of the beverage jumped for joy when news spread this week that Ecto was very likely on its way back. Naturally, The Resurrect Ecto Cooler Twitter account got happy about this news in an “all-caps” kind of way.

No word yet on when Ecto-Cooler is set to hit grocery store shelves, but it expect before Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot hits theater screens next summer.
