Henry Rollins Reads (and Screams About) Dr. Seuss

Singer, actor, and activist Henry Rollins is rarely shy about speaking his mind, but he’s not above mocking his own persona. In a new video for Funny or Die, Rollins spends nearly 16 minutes reading and dissecting Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, the very last book written by the legendary children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss!

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! was an unusual book (even for Dr. Seuss!) which explored the future adventures of a young boy as he ventured out into the greater world for the first time. One of the things that Rollins’ criticizes about the book is the fact that the unnamed protagonist is a male. “So what, women don’t get to go anywhere? Or is travel just designated for smirking self-satisfied Caucasian males? I’m mad already!” Fair warning, Rollins’ comments do get a little NSFW. But his harshest language is saved for the book itself.

Rollins may actually believe in most, if not all, of the things that he says about the book. But the video is largely a tongue-in-cheek string-of- consciousness commentary about the underlying messages of Dr. Seuss’ tale that somehow becomes a starting point for Rollins to talk about gun control, Donald Trump, income inequality, and the larger problems facing our democracy.

What did you think about Rollins’ extended rant and Dr. Seuss commentary? Oh, the thoughts you’ll leave in the comment section below! Bonus points if you do it in a Seuss inspired rhyme!
