Breaking Down the Henry Cavill/Superman Controversy

In many ways, 2018 has been a great year for Henry Cavill. With Justice League in his rear view mirror, Cavill and his mustache co-headlined Mission: Impossible – Fallout before landing the leading role in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher. However, Cavill’s future as the Man of Steel came into question when The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Cavill is out of the Superman business. Or is he? Today’s Nerdist News is breaking free of the Phantom Zone to make you kneel before Zod as we search for answers.

Join host and the second-to-last daughter of Krypton, Jessica Chobot, as she brings us up to speed on Cavill’s Superman status. According to THR, talks between Cavill’s reps and the studio broke down over a potential cameo in the Shazam movie.  That report also indicated a Supergirl film was the studio’s new priority, and a Man of Steel sequel starring Cavill simply wasn’t on the agenda.

If Cavill is done with Superman, then who would take over the iconic role? Could it be Michael B. Jordan? Deadline‘s report indicated Warner Bros. has considered casting Jordan in the role “down the road.” But before too long, Dany Garcia, one of Cavill’s representatives, tweeted out a message suggesting Superman’s cape “is still in his closet.” A Warner Bros. spokesperson later added the studio’s relationship with Cavill “continues to remain unchanged,” before adding “we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”

Was this all an elaborate contract ploy that played out in the press? It’s possible. If WB and Cavill’s reps come to an agreement, we wouldn’t be shocked to see Cavill put on his super suit again. We still don’t know if Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman, so Cavill’s current status just adds another level of uncertainty to the DCEU. But if Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman 1984 deliver a hot streak for DC and WB, then we think we’ll see a Superman movie back in the mix somewhere down the line.
