Have Some Pun With Hanksy

Turning the lens of the serious art world on itself and making some enemies in the process is Hanksy. Keeping his anonymity in the best way possible with a super imposed Tom Hanks face over his own. Check out the short film about Hanksy directed by Nicolas Heller, with cinematography by Oliver Lucian Anderson.

His name, as well as his pun-heavy art, mirrors that of the anonymous and super popular Banksy. But where Banksy’s work may shed light on the problems with the world, Hanksy’s art is meant to be lighthearted with the bonus result of taking the wind out of those in the art world who would say art needs to be serious.

Last weekend, Hanksy converted an abandoned bank in downtown Manhattan, filling it with his art–a ton of his art– and just about as much fun stuff as he could think of. Super fans of Hanksy, with the help of an Instagram scavenger hunt, searched the city for so called “Golden Tickets” that would allow them entry. Additionally, a line that eventually had to be broken up by police formed around the block for the chance to see the art installation.

Placing many of his pieces around the city, Hanky’s work began with a simple idea of integrating Tom Hanks’ face onto famous Banksy pieces. Instead of keeping it an in-joke with his friends, he decided to do it for real, saying he “thought it’d be more hysterical if it was actually on the street,” and that “The next day someone snapped a pic and it went viral, and I was like, ‘Ah f**k, let’s do it again.'”

Check out a sampling of Hanksy’s awesomely pun-ified work in the gallery below and the rest at Hanksy.com.

Bonus shout-out to fellow Rhode Islander Falside for providing the music to the film. Check out the song here and his other tracks here.
