HARRY POTTER Director David Yates Could Be Coming Back for FANTASTIC BEASTS

It looks like Director David Yates may not be done apparating into the world of Harry Potter. Variety reports the filmmaker is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct the first movie in the upcoming spinoff trilogy Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. There isn’t any official confirmation of negotiations, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Yates at the helm of at least the first movie.

In case you’ve lost your Remembrall or can’t remember what you’ve forgotten, Yates directed the last four films in the Harry Potter series. While those movies had some incredible high moments and emotion, they also stumbled a little (cough, Half-Blood Prince, cough). But, putting Yates in charge would bring a familiar face into the new story and offer a thread of continuity. While it would be comforting see the on-screen Harry Potter universe put back into mostly capable hands, we don’t necessarily need the same tone or approach for the spinoff.

Fantastic Beasts takes place seven decades before Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. Both the magic and muggle words are different and need to look distinct from what we see in the other films. It seems like choosing a fresh face would be better suited for accomplishing that goal. J.K. Rowling has described the Fantastic Beasts textbook as an extension of the wizarding world, and the films should really bite into the mythology. I picture it being closer in tone to the first four Harry Potter movies than the last four, and if Yates takes the job, I hope he’s equal to the task of changing things up.

The first installment of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled for release in November 2016.

Head to the comments and let us know your opinion about Yates jumping in to direct.
