Last year’s Blumhouse Productions horror hit Happy Death Day is getting a sequel in 2019, and the first trailer has arrived, promising a brand new Groundhog Day-esque time loop and even higher stakes.
In Happy Death Day 2U, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe)âwho spent the first film trapped in a repetitious single-day time loop, which always ended in her deathâis once again stuck in time. That fateful death day is back, this time with a new killer (but the same baby face mask), a higher set of stakes, and a crazy new energy. This thing looks like a ton of fun!
Happy Death Day was a huge hit for Blumhouse, the low-budget production company that also gave us Paranormal Activity, Get Out, and this year’s Halloween sequel. On a budget of just $4.8 million, Happy Death Day raked in $122.6 million at the box office. Writer/director Christopher B. Landon is back for the sequel, so Blumhouse can surely expect another big hit if he’s able to recapture the magic of the original. From the looks of this trailer, he definitely has.
In an interview with Collider, the film’s star, Rothe, compared Happy Death Day 2U to Back to the Future. “It explains a lot of things in the first one that didnât get explained, and it elevates everything,” she said. “I was really pleased to know that we werenât just gonna be pushing all the buttons that people loved the first time, over and over again, âcause I think that gets old.”
Happy Death Day 2U hits theaters February 14, 2019.
