Sorry, fans of the 2010 Norwegian movie Trollhunter (which is excellent, by the way; watch it sometime if you haven’t)—this isn’t a spin-off of that.

But we’re not that sorry, really, because GUILLERMO DEL TORO CARTOON! Based on a young adult book by del Toro and Daniel Kraus—in which a teenage boy discovers that his father’s memories of encountering a scary troll as a child are real and part of an underground world beneath their hometown—Trollhunters is one of two new Dreamworks animated shows Netflix announced today. (The other one being Voltron, but more on that in a second.)

Despite being for kids, it looks to be full of all the GdT visual hallmarks we know and gush about, as this cover might imply:

As for Voltron, I don’t have to explain that to you, right? Everyone who reads Nerdist should know the tale of the giant super-robot piloted by a bunch of astronauts, yeah? Well, all we know about this version is that it’s a “reimagining” of sorts.

From the official announcement:

Starting in 2016, Netflix will launch several new series from DWA, including a reimagining of Voltron, and the new series, Trollhunters, from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro, who will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.

Over the term of the new agreement, a number of new original series will be developed and produced by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix, based not only on recent and upcoming feature films from the studio, but also on other classic IP.   

What might those “other classic IP” be? Here’s a hint: Dreamworks Animation owns cartoon rights to Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Wendy the Good Little Witch, He-Man, She-Ra, Fat Albert, Gumby, VeggieTales, Where’s Waldo, Shazam, Rankin-Bass’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman. Somehow I think Fat Albert will be put on the back-burner for possibly ever, but the rest seem like fair game.

Dreamworks Animation has previously had success on Netflix with spin-off cartoons based on How to Train Your Dragon and Puss in Boots. This further proves their programming choices are taking them in interesting directions.

Expect to hear much more coming out of their Netflix deal in the future. Which of those properties would you like to see revived, if any? I’m a He-Man kind of guy, but let me know why your choice is better below.
