GRAVITY, THE WALKING DEAD, and BREAKING BAD Win Big at the Fortieth Annual Saturn Awards

On Thursday night I had the pleasure of attending my favorite Hollywood awards ceremony, and the nerdiest: the Fortieth Annual Saturn Awards. For as long as I’ve attended (this was my sixth Saturns ceremony), the event has proven to be the strangest mash-up of talent that Tinseltown can muster. Icons like Quentin Tarantino, Mel Brooks, and Joss Whedon have appeared alongside the folks behind the hottest TV productions, as well as character actors best known for shows forgotten by all but the most devoted pop-culture aficionados. One thing’s for sure — at no other awards ceremony will you hear the theme song to Airwolf playing during dinner.

The big winners at this years Saturns were Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, which took home five awards (the most of any film nominated) and The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, which — with three each — tied for the most awards won by a TV show. Special Saturn Awards were given to Hannibal producer Bryan Fuller (pictured below alongside actress and presenter Kristin Chenoweth), who scored the Dan Curtis Legacy Award, Greg Nicotero, whose George Pal Memorial Award was accepted by his buddy Robert Rodriguez, Marc Cushman, who earned the Special Recognition Award for his Star Trek history books (These are the Voyages), and Malcolm McDowell (pictured above alongside friend and presenter Lance Henriksen), who received the Life Career Award.
