Warning: this recap contains spoilers from Monday’s season finale of Gotham … since it is, you know, an actual recap. You’ve been warned!
Just when you thought Gotham, both the show and the city, couldn’t get any crazier, Fish Mooney releases the actual crazies upon the streets of Gotham.
I have no idea what the shocking ending of the season two finale means for season three, but if we get more Fish Mooney and her nutty new powers of persuasion, along with all the Indian Hill escapees terrorizing the streets of Gotham, then sign me up ASAP. This summer is going to a long one. Let’s get right into recapping the final episode of season two, “Transference,” before our months without Gotham begin, shall we?
But first, I’ve got to start off this recap with saying just how disappointed I am in both Harvey Bullock and Alfred. How could neither of these two men, who supposedly know Jim Gordon so well, not see that Clayface was an impostor? All day after Faux Gordon “escaped” from his sleuthing in Indian Hill, he acted super weird. Not just off, but like a completely different person, from his mannerisms to his voice to his actions and choices. He even gave up on wanting to prosecute Hugo Strange, despite having rock solid proof that Strange was behind the Wayne murders and all the goings on at Indian Hill, and knowing that Luscious Fox and Bruce Wayne were still somewhere inside Indian Hill, trapped. After all Gordon had done in the past to try and avenge Bruce’s parents’ murders, how could Alfred and Bullock not see something was up immediately when Gordon stopped caring about Bruce?! Guys, come on. Step your game up!
In fact, it was Barbara of all people who was the first to notice that “Jim” wasn’t Jim, and it only took her about 15 seconds (and one come on from Faux Gordon) in just one exchange in the GCPD for her to realize the truth. One sucker punch to the face later, and Bullock and Alfred saw for themselves that Clayface Gordon had an actual clay face, and their real BFF was still stuck inside Indian Hill. Who would have thought that it would be Stabby Babs to the rescue?!
Once the GCPD was alerted that the real Gordon was still trapped inside Indian Hill, and with a nuclear bomb set to go off in 30 minutes no less, it was time to launch a full-scale rescue mission. But of course, Gordon didn’t need anyone to save him. He can save himself (duh), and so he did. With a little coercion from Ed Nygma and a lucky misunderstanding from Ms. Peabody, Gordon and Luscious were able to disarm the nuke that was chilling underneath Arkham that Strange had armed to cover up his tracks, and the GCPD arrested Strange and Peabody. All’s well that ends well?
Not so fast. Their troubles were far from over. Fresh off the revelation that she had new powers of persuasion just by touching people, Fish Mooney escaped Indian Hill with an entire busload of Strange’s other human experiments. That was bad news for Strange, since his boss, the White Lady, expressly forbade him from letting any other projects out of Indian Hill, no matter the cost. What’s she going to say now that a full wing of monsters has been let loose upon Gotham?!
Fish didn’t get far, though, since Penguin decided he wanted his own revenge on Strange for what he did to him in Arkham. Penguin had Butch take out the bus Fish was driving with a machine gun, assuming it was Strange driving it and not Fish. But with just one touch of Penguin’s face, Fish knocked him out and sent Butch and his cronies running with one wink. Fish is back, and she’s better than ever, y’all! Hopefully this means we get more Jada Pinkett Smith next season now that Fish is back out on the streets with her new powers. How many episodes do you think we’ll get her for in season three?
And let’s not forget that at least one good thing came out of Strange’s weird experiments down in Indian Hill. After injecting Gordon with truth serum earlier in the hour, Strange made Gordon realize his feelings of guilt in regards to Lee losing her baby were not valid enough to keep him away from the woman he loved. After saving the day in Indian Hill, he said his goodbyes and left to find Lee (after stealing Bullock’s car, because that’s what friends are for?). The guy deserves some happiness after the year he’s had!
Meanwhile, Alfred was dismayed to learn that Bruce had a new lead he wanted to track down after getting out of Indian Hill: the secret council that runs Gotham that Strange told Gordon about when he thought Gordon was about to die in the explosion. Oops! Alfred has no idea that he’s never going to have a quiet moment with Bruce again … especially since one of the monsters that escaped Indian Hill is a Bruce Wayne lookalike. Is this another Clayface, or something even more sinister? We’ll have to wait until season three to find out.
