Goldensuns’ “Give It Up” Is a Shimmering, Hazy Gem (Premiere)

Jantzen, Weston, and Chase Meierare three brothers from Salt Lake City who make bright pops and sharp angles with guitars as Goldensuns. The trio has been making dreamy rock music since 2011, back when they had a space and one less “s” in their band name. Since then, however, they have refined their sound, allowing it to breathe a little bit more. The pauses in between breaths, it turns out, is where this trio really thrives.

“Give It Up” showcases their acumen for smart songwriting. Jabs of guitar wash in and out like the tide, simple percussion and bass provide enough room for the vocal hooks that are the heart of this song. Though catchy, the song is also languorous, in a sensual way; the line, “I am just so tired of you,” sounds beautifully defeated. It registers as the feeling you have when you are about a half a step beyond deliriously tired but still socially engaged. Like the only thing you know at that moment is how insane it is that you are still functioning at all, let alone in a conversation. Maybe that’s just me?

Goldensun’s debut EP is due out this coming spring, and I hope they are coming to SXSW so I can see them at a shitty bar and tell them to keep up the good work.

Matt Grosinger is the music editor of the Nerdist, and this is the first song he has enjoyed since listening to Kanye’s new album over the weekend.
