Breaking Down the New GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Trailer

When big ol’ monsters want to fight it out, humans just have to get out of the way. The initial teaser for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, soundtracked by “Clair de Lune,” debuted at Comic-Con last summer and was a haunting introduction of Godzilla’s fellow Toho monsters, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah the three-headed monster. Now for the full trailer for Michael Dougherty’s addition to Legendary’s MonsterVerse is here and not holding back, giving us money shot after money shot of all four of the titans…and more monsters that we don’t know about yet.

If you thought the first trailer didn’t show enough of any particular monster, this trailer remedies that, and Jessica Chobot is breaking it all down on today’s Nerdist News! We see tons of Rodan, erupting from a volcano and flying over people and cities whilst Monarch aircraft surround him; we see several instances of Mothra, flapping her shimmering wings and later tearing through the sky and screeching; and we see puh-lenty of Ghidorah reeling back and demolishing everything from Fenway Park to Godzilla himself.

We also see quite a bit of the humans dealing with these titans. Monarch is revealed to be a much better funded organization than we initially thought, with what appears to be containment facilities all over the world, including a deep undersea base where Kyle Chandler is seen observing a dormant Godzilla. Thomas Middleditch is seen testifying before what looks like a Senate hearing on behalf of Monarch. He talks about these titans either becoming “protectors” or “destroyers,” followed by Ken Watanabe’s Dr. Ishiro Serizawa saying we’re Godzilla’s pets. Makes sense.

There are also a few brief shots of what appear to be underwater ruins. It seems to point to ancient humans worshiping at least one (but probably all) of these titans. It may also suggest where Godzilla has been since the events of the first movie. Seems like it’d be hard for a 350-foot tall lizard to hide.

Throughout the trailer we see quick glimpses of other creatures that do not seem to be any of our main four monsters. The first comes in the desert as what appears to be a many-legged, spider-like creature arising from the sand; the second appears when an idyllic mountain scene is disturbed by the mountain itself getting up; and the third comes very late in the trailer and appears to be a lava or magma-infused monster. Much like the mutos in the first Godzilla and the ancillary Skull Island monsters in Kong: Skull Island, we’re betting these won’t be full-fledged titans but lesser entities in the mythology–probably newly created for the film like the mutos were–awakened because of all the titans rising.

Ultimately, the struggle will come down to which king will come out on top. Godzilla has the subtitle of “King of the Monsters,” but Ghidorah A) is enormous–as evidenced by the final shot of the two squaring off–and 2) has traditionally already had the superlative “King” in front of his/their name. We’re not sure which side Mothra or Rodan will take in this, but we’re sure hoping Godzilla is a smooth talker and can convince them. Or whatever titans do.

Stay glued to Nerdist for a full shot-for-shot breakdown of the trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters later today.
