The Nerdist Industries space at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles is going to be the site for a series of panels that anyone interested in television writing, or television, period, will want to attend. Really, for those into what goes into the creation and writing of what you see on TV, this is — and here, I have to borrow a trademark from Chris — awesome.
It’s called “TV Writing! A Four Part Series,” it will feature writers, producers, and creators from some of the shows you love the most, and it’s being presented by the non-profit 826LA, more about which later.
But first, the panels: Some of the most accomplished people in the field of writing for TV will be on panels talking about the business, the craft, solo vs. staff writing, new media, and much more, plus tips and answers to your questions.
Who’s coming? Here are the panels, as presently scheduled:
March 6th: Allan Loeb, screenwriter (The Switch, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Dilemma, and Just Go With It), and creator of the TV series New Amsterdam. Phoef Sutton, writer and Executive Producer of Cheers, writer and consultant on a million shows, from NewsRadio and Boston Legal to Terriers. Rob Roy Thomas, whose Significant Others on Bravo was a pioneer of unscripted sitcoms.
March 13th: Emily Cutler, prolific TV writer (Community, Carpoolers, Love, Inc., Entourage). David Fury, writer/director with credits like 24, Lost, Buffy, Angel, Dream On, and Pinky and the Brain. Jeff Greenstein, writer/producer of shows like Dream On, Friends, Will & Grace, and Desperate Housewives.
March 20th: Dan Harmon– Community! Steven Levitan– Modern Family John Enbom– Party Down!
March 27th: Oh, you Nerdists will love this trio: Jane Espenson (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Dollhouse, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Game of Thrones, Warehouse 13, and Torchwood: Miracle Day), Drew Z. Greenberg (Buffy, Firefly, Smallville, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Dexter, and Warehouse 13), and Damon Lindelof (Nash Bridges. Oh, right, Lost, too)
Wow.
And for those of you who know the podcast and stage production The Thrilling Adventure Hour (mentioned frequently on ye olde Nerdist Podcast), the co-creator of that particular deal, Ben Blacker, will be the moderator.
If you’re at all interested in the craft of writing for TV, or just want to hear from some of the more successful and interesting practitioners of the art about what it’s like to work on and/or create some of your most beloved television shows, You have to go to this.

Tickets are $12 for each week (plus $1.23 fee per ticket), $36 for the full series (plus $1.71 fee per ticket), and all proceeds go to 826LA, which offers creative and expository writing tutoring and workshops for kids ages 6 to 18. And here’s the standard disclaimer: Panels and panelists are subject to change, ’cause things happen. And it’s a production of 826LA as part of its Writing Series for Adults; it’s not a Nerdist production, although we think it’s worth checking out and it’ll be in our soon-to-be new home.

I would be willing to pay full ticket price for a recording of these sessions. Even a multiple cassette recording sent via snail mail. That’s how great I know this event will be.
I would like to also add to the chorus… please find a way to make me able to listen to these! I’d gladly contribute to the cause, also. If it’s a pay option, should be a no-brainer for 826LA, since Nerdist Industries will already have a method of recording the panel installed (considering live podcasts is an already-planned recurring event), right?

Any chance of a podcast of these panels? Maybe with a “Pay what you will” price point and all proceeds going to 826LA? I’m on the east coast and can’t attend, but would like to be able to contribute financially as well as soak up the knowledge.

I would also pay to see these online, live or recorded (although asking people to pay for a live stream is a guaranteed way to get unhappy customers). It’s too hard for out-of-towners to make it to LA by Sunday.

I third the suggestion to try and get an agreement with these folks to post these seminars on Nerdist. I’d pay for that. Or will they be posting them on some other site (pay or otherwise), and if so can you let us know when that happens?
I agree that it would be awesome for those of us who don’t live in LA to be able to listen to or view these panel discussions as a podcast. I would also be happy to pay a reasonable fee for this. I understand this is not a Nerdist production, but why not work with whom ever is producing this series to get it to the rest of us out there.
