These Giant Kinetic Sculptures Are Both Beautiful and Hypnotizing

Prepare to lose at least a few minutes of your day staring at these immensely beautiful kinetic sculptures. Whether they’re powered by the wind or motorized, Anthony Howe‘s art is mesmerizing in every sense of the word. His humongous pieces of art, although made of metal, appear fluid and almost like living organisms.

The “Di-Octo” appears part octopus, part exploding star when moving in the wind atop its silvery monolith. Each arm’s concentric circles give us the impression of fluidity while simply turning around the sculpture’s main ring. For anyone not content with GIFs and YouTube videos, you can give the Di-Octo a happy home for the hefty (yet probably worth it if you had the money and a place to put it) $225,000.

Howe’s “In Cloud Light III” appears to work similarly, treating the central ring as an axis, but with substantially more armatures with varied lengths and design. This sculpture folds in on itself in an endlessly renewing spiral. It has a rather otherworldly and alien feel to it, not unlike one of the only slightly redeeming scenes from the Green Lantern movie.

The motor-operated “Switchback,” on the other hand, seems familiar in some very weird ways. Somewhat reminiscent of a spine or DNA, it also appears deliberately aquatic and brings to mind the thought of a densely populated school of fish swimming through the ocean. While “In Cloud Light III” is in the process of being sold, “Switchback” can be yours for the the relatively cheaper price of $45,000.
