I know, I know….we’re all sick of 3D movies, and the often cheap conversion process many shot-in-2D movies go through only signifies an extra charge. Sure, Avatar had awesome, groundbreaking 3D when it came out back in 2009, but how many bad 3D movies have we been subjected to since then that just plain sucked? Why pay extra money to watch a muddy picture and then get a headache afterwards?
But if there’s one movie that you know will probably do the conversion process correctly and knock your socks off, it has to be JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There’s too much on the line to have the IMAX 3D in this movie end up looking like Clash of the Titans or so many others. And now there’s another added incentive to see The Force Awakens in 3D, as RealD and Lucasfilm/Disney have partnered up for special edition 3D glasses for screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, inspired by some of the new characters in the film.
Each of the four glasses is inspired by one of the characters in the movie, so fans can choose between the lovable BB-8, the badass Captain Phasma, the evil Kylo Ren, or new First Order-style stormtrooper glasses, each designed to evoke the aesthetic of the character they represent. Of all of these glasses, I’d say Kylo Ren looks the coolest and the sleekest, but then Star Wars has always had a knack for making the bad guys look way cooler than the good guys.
You can check out early images of the new glasses below:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters in the U.S. on December 18th, while the U.K. will get the film a day earlier on the 17th, and France a day earlier than that on the 16th.
